Ikhtilat (Free mixing between man and woman)

According to Shaykh Muhammad Bin Ibrahim Aal-Al Sheikh [1311-1389 H (1893-1969 AD)], the former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, said that free mixing between men and women can be of three types.

1)The mixing of women with men who are their Mahram (husband and men whom she may never marry, e.g. father, brother, son etc) which is permissible.

2)The mixing of women with non-Mahram men for evil and depraved purposes which is prohibited (haram).

3)The mixing of women with non-Mahram men in educational institutes, shops, offices, hospitals, get-togethers, parties etc.

Therefore, mixing of women with non-Mahram men for evil and depraved purposes is not allowed (haram). This is because Allah made men to have a natural inclination towards women and gave them power over the females and vice versa. Hence, when free mixing occurs between women and (non-Mahram) men, it will cause to bad intention as the human’s fitrah (nature) self is inclined towards evil and (carnal) desires make a person blind and dumb, while Satan commands people to do indecent and evil things.

Evidence is based on the Hadith of the Prophet pertaining to the Command to avoid Zina (Unlawful Sex) and everything that leads to it. Reported by At-Tirmithee and Ahmad: The Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said,

"A man must never be alone with a woman, for verily the Satan is their third."

Al Qardawi interpreting the above hadith states that Islam prohibits khalwah between a man and women outside mahram relationship on the basis that to protect the parties from the evil thought and sexual desires which will naturally arise from man and women if they are let to be alone together without the intrusion by the third party.

In addition, according to Imam Ibn Qayyim (may Allah have Mercy on him) he said:

“There is no doubt that enabling women to mix freely (ikhtilat) with men is the root of every calamity and evil. It is one of the biggest reasons for general punishment (from Allah) to befall (a society). It is also one of the reasons of corruption of general and specific matters. Free-mixing between men and women is also the reason for increase in immorality and illegal sexual intercourse (zina). It is one of the reasons of widespread death and incessant plagues.

One of the greatest reasons of widespread death is fornication and adultery (zina) due to enabling women to mix freely with men and move among them made up and dressed up. Had the rulers known what corruption it causes in worldly affairs and the society, before the hereafter, they would have been the strictest in stopping it.” [Al-Turuq Al-Hukmiyyah, page 407-408]

As conclusion, I will conclude by mentioning a few verses of the Qur'an. Allah says: "Nor come nigh to adultery". In this verse, Allah does not say "Do not commit adultery" but tells us not even to come close to it. This means that everything that may seduce a person to fall into adultery is unlawful. Therefore, we as a Muslimah shall guard our modesty and always behave in Islamic manner internally and externally especially when we deal with men. Wallahualam.
